Post-Shooting, Self-Defense Techniques

We promote a self-defense strategy that begins with a proper mindset of awareness and avoidance. Close-Quarters Self-Defense:

We need to develop other skills to defend against an attack at a close distance. Unfortunately, even though most of us know this reality, many still fail to grow in this area.

For this reason, our friend and instructor, Matt Numrich, has produced an 11-part video training program on Close Quarter Defensive Tactics. Today, we will share one of the videos from that series below, but please note, the entire course is available now for Guardian Nation Members.

What happens if the shot misses or the shot is non-effective and they've closed the gap. Here are some strategies you can use in these situations.

Techniques covered in this lesson are the:

  1. Elbow Strike
  2. Knee Strike
  3. Head Butt

Too many times the assumption is that once you shoot an attacker, the fight is over.  Of course, this isn't always the case.

We rarely account for missed shots.

And sometimes don't consider options if the attacker continues their attack after being shot.

Furthermore,  what if there is more than one attacker. What techniques can we use if we’re successful in stopping one bad guy, but a second person attacks? We may not have time or space to shoot them, or they may not be a threat that justifies us using deadly force.

One can rely on the three moves we’ve covered previously in the “Pre Shooting” defensive instruction, but in this case, we will assume that the attacker closed the gap. It becomes difficult or impossible in some instances, to use a firearm against someone who is extremely close.  Therefore, more “close quarter” tools must be utilized.

Like any other self-defense technique, these techniques are not overly complicated. The methods are repeatable and straightforward so that we can perform them under stress, not just at half-speed with a compliant attacker.

As you will see when viewing this lesson, the course requires active, physical participation. Therefore, getting a buddy or family member to take the class with you would be ideal. This way, you have a person with whom you can go through the repetitions.

To get the most of the gun disarms and future lessons, it would help to have an inert training gun. So what I recommend is a dedicated training aid, something like this rubber replica of the popular Beretta 92 handgun. It is colored bright yellow to ensure everyone knows it is a training aid and not a live gun.

    Perhaps the best initial movement is to “get off the line” and “open distance” which is much faster for both buying additional time for a follow-up shot as well as mitigating the forward energy of the attacker. While the strikes demonstrated here are better than I’ll ever be able to deliver, I don’t want to be in the path of the raging bull and I’d rather use my firearm to keep distance and solve the problem.
    The other problem that we face in these scenarios is that we’re fighting with the weapon in hand which deprives me of a grabbing tool and, depending on how one is trained, even a striking tool (yes, the weapon can be used as a striking tool, but on the initial examination causes at least two problems – first, a malfunction may be induced which must be resolved before getting the weapon back into the fight, and second, it becomes the point of focus and I don’t like to play keep-away!
    Happy to discuss further – perhaps I failed to grasp the initial constraints of the encounter.
