The New Ruger RXM – A Modular, Glock-Compatible Pistol with Magpul Innovation

Ruger has once again made waves in the handgun market with the introduction of the Ruger RXM, a new modular pistol released in December 2024. This firearm is the result of a groundbreaking collaboration between Ruger and Magpul, combining Ruger’s legendary reliability with Magpul’s expertise in ergonomic, high-quality polymer design.

The RXM is designed to be Glock Gen 3 compatible, meaning it works seamlessly with existing Glock 19 slides, barrels, and components. However, its real innovation lies in its modular fire control system, which allows users to swap frames without replacing the serialized insert. This adaptability, customization potential, and compatibility with widely available aftermarket parts make the RXM an exciting new option for firearm enthusiasts.

What Makes the Ruger RXM Unique?

The Ruger RXM is built around a fire control insert that houses the serialized component of the firearm. This means you can swap out frames, change configurations, and customize your firearm without the need for multiple registered handguns. Here’s why this design is a game-changer:

1. Modular Fire Control System

Unlike traditional polymer-framed pistols where the serial number is stamped onto the frame, the RXM features a removable, serialized fire control unit (FCU). This system, similar to what SIG Sauer introduced with the P320, allows users to:

  • Swap between different frame sizes and colors.
  • Customize grip styles without purchasing a new firearm.
  • Upgrade or change configurations while maintaining the same registered FCU.

2. Glock Gen 3 Compatibility

The Ruger RXM’s tritium front sight ensures fast target acquisition in low-light conditions, making it an excellent choice for defensive carry.

The RXM is fully compatible with Glock Gen 3 G19 components, making it one of the most customizable handguns on the market. This includes:

  • Slides
  • Barrels
  • Sights
  • Magazines

This compatibility means shooters can integrate aftermarket Glock parts, offering a nearly limitless array of custom options.

3. Ergonomic Magpul Frame

Magpul, known for its innovative approach to polymer firearm accessories, designed the RXM’s grip and frame. The frame provides:

  • Enhanced ergonomics with a comfortable grip angle.
  • Improved texturing for superior control.
  • Multiple color options and sizes, with more expected to be released in the future.

For those familiar with Magpul’s PMAGs and accessories, the RXM frame continues the company’s reputation for durability, lightweight design, and reliability.

4. Optimized for Carry & Performance

The Ruger RXM’s forward and rear serrations allow for secure slide manipulation, ensuring reliable function in any condition.

The RXM is concealment-ready and designed for everyday carry (EDC). Key features include:

  • 4-inch barrel, striking the balance between compact size and shootability.
  • 15-round magazine, offering a solid capacity for self-defense.
  • Tritium front sight, ensuring quick target acquisition in low-light conditions.
  • Lightweight construction, making it comfortable for all-day carry.

Shooting Performance: How Does the RXM Handle?

From initial tests and reviews, the RXM has been praised for its exceptional shooting performance. According to Ruger’s Eric Lundgren:

“This is a fantastic gun—shoots great, runs like a dream, and feels amazing in the hand.”

A few key takeaways from early shooters:

  • Crisp trigger pull with a clean break and quick reset.
  • Minimal recoil, making follow-up shots fast and accurate.
  • Comfortable grip, allowing for a secure hold even during extended shooting sessions.

Thanks to Magpul’s thoughtfully designed grip angle and frame ergonomics, the RXM offers a natural point of aim, reducing shooter fatigue and improving accuracy.

Why the RXM Matters in Today’s Handgun Market

The RXM enters a competitive field of modular handguns, taking on major players like the SIG P320 and Glock 19X. However, its combination of modularity, Glock compatibility, and Magpul innovation could set it apart.

Who Is the RXM For?

✔️ Glock Owners – If you already own a Gen 3 Glock 19, the RXM gives you an easy path to a more ergonomic, modular upgrade.
✔️ Everyday Carriers – Its compact design, customizable grip options, and 15-round capacity make it perfect for EDC.
✔️ Competition Shooters – The smooth trigger, accurate sights, and lightweight build make it great for practical shooting sports.
✔️ Customization Enthusiasts – If you love modifying and tweaking your firearms, the RXM’s FCU and Gen 3 compatibility give you endless options.

I would like to start by saying I am a novice shooter, I am now considered a senior by age category and I do own a Glock 19. I prefer to run them like they come meaning I do not use red dots on any of my weapons ,what can I say I’m old school in the true sense of the statement.I purchased this when it first came out mainly because of it’s affordability and let’s be honest to see if in fact a more user friendly Glock had been reintroduced to the market.I am truthfully not a Glock fan boy matter of factly I prefer the S&W brand if I am being honest. I have cycled about 600 rounds thru the gun and only had 2 failure to eject malfunctions, and it was so cold in the range that day that I have a feeling that I may in fact have caused this reaction from being so cold in was in the 35 degree temperature range inside the range that day. I actually do enjoy shooting this gun the grip and works well with my medium size hands ,sights are good and the overall ergonomics are better in my humble opinion that the standard Glock 19. I know that they will be plenty of people out there saying that I trashed Glock pistols, not at all I have no interest in getting rid of my model 19 I shoot it pretty well , but I find that I shoot this newer version just a little more accurately and for $400.00 can’t beat the price. I don’t know if I would refer to it as revolutionary but it certainly has some unique aspects to an old twist and I am really enjoying it to this point.
