Places Off Limits

- Public and private K-12 school buildings, when posted with AG-approved signage. School grounds can't be posted, only buildings, and if a building isn't posted, carry is allowed
- State and municipal buildings, and public areas within them, that have adequate security measures at all public entrances — electronic screening equipment plus armed personnel — and are conspicuously posted with AG-approved signage. Without both security and signage, carry can't be prohibited
- State or municipal-owned medical care facilities, community mental health centers, indigent health care clinics, and buildings owned or leased by the University of Kansas Hospital Authority or within the Wyandotte County health care district — when posted
- Secure areas of correctional facilities, jails, and law enforcement agencies
- Courtrooms and ancillary courtrooms, where the chief judge of the district has limited weapons and the courtroom has adequate security
- Any private building where the owner provides adequate security measures and posts AG-approved signage
- Any public or private building posted with AG-approved signage — though for a licensee this is not a crime; you can be denied entry, asked to leave, and charged with trespass only if you refuse
- Postsecondary institutions may impose their own conditions. The Kansas AG has opined that a college or university can require a firearm be carried with an empty chamber, and community colleges can ban open carry
- Anywhere federal law prohibits firearms
- State parks located on Army Corps of Engineers land, per federal law
