Carrying in Your Vehicle - Best Practices & Biggest Mistakes

0:00/57:40

About This Episode:

In this episode we discuss how to handle a firearm in a vehicle and when it makes more sense to keep it on our person versus staging it in the car. We cover the safety risks of administrative handling, the challenges of reholstering in a vehicle, and why appendix carry can work well with a seatbelt.

We also talk about the drawbacks of leaving a gun in a vehicle, including theft, access by others, and forgetting it when exiting. Finally, we look at vehicle-mounted storage and staging options, with emphasis on secure mounting, trigger protection, reliability, and keeping the firearm out of view.

I EDC a Ruger RxM (19size) OWB hip and wear a “fisherman” style vest for concealment.

I do a LOT of road errands most days, in and out of car. I take the vest off as I enter the driver seat, place it on the dash in front of me with collar near the A-pillar. As I exit, I swing the vest out and slip it on in a fashion (think Dracula) draping me as I climb out ~ this keeps the holstered gun (and mags) from view by anyone else.

I do have a Safe-Lok fastened to back seat for those RARE occasions that I must disarm. Again, I do this in rear door wedge with vest concealing my activity (and super aware of anyone nearby while in this vulnerable position).

I have practiced draws in both of my regular vehicles (Ford Escape and Chevy Suburban) and can do so easily and consistently if I position the holster properly as I enter the seat. Consistency is key. I don’t find this uncomfortable even on hours-long drives.
