In the words of one of my favorite childhood cartoon characters, Rafiki from the Lion King, It is time! Time for what? Well, for SHOT Show 2019. We are leaving in just a few days and every year we try to step up our coverage of the show so it's like you're there with us. For those of you who've never heard of this all-important gun trade show, let's discuss its importance as well as what I'm most excited for this year, in particular.
What is SHOT Show? To put it plainly, it's THE outdoor trade show. It covers all things shooting, hunting, and just plain old firearms related. It's been happening since 1979 and used to take place in various places across the country.
However, for the past 10 or so years it's been held in Las Vegas at the Sands. It's a massive event where most, though certainly not all, of the gun-industry manufacturers will be all under one roof. It's the biggest firearm event of the year, each year, and is something that people travel to not just from around the country, but from around the world.
I've met people from Russia, Philippines, Israel, Turkey, and plenty of other countries there on the show floor. The show consistently draws tens of thousands of people during the week of January it's held, with last year having about 65,000 people pass through the doors.
Even though 65,000 is a lot of people, not everyone can go. You have to meet certain criteria, and for media professionals like myself, it's getting more difficult to go with each passing year. Not because it's expensive for companies to go, even though it can be, but because you have to be a part of the firearm industry media, meeting certain standards.
What this means, is that only legit media companies can go, and again, it gets harder every year.
Furthermore, it's even harder to get into the Media Day at the Range the day before the show itself starts. The Range Day is by invite only, and only folks who are industry pros with actual industry contacts can go. This means that you need to have dealt with the big boys and gals over at one of the companies exhibiting and they have to recognize your professionalism and invite you to go.
In that age old saying, it's not who you know. But who knows you.
Last year, 1,700 people went, and of those, about 1,000 were media. When you take into account that each media company goes with at least 3 people, with the bigger companies going with more than that, it means that there aren't that many media companies actually recognized by the industry as legit.
For example, ConcealedCarry.com is going with at least 8 people, though I'm not certain when people's flights get in. Oh, and we are a medium size media company. Why so many people? Well, we have a couple guys with cameras, a couple people doing interviews, some people just taking pictures, others just doing social media type stuff, and others still taking notes to write articles.
Take all that for whatever it's worth, but ConcealedCarry.com will be there in force with a team of people trying to bring you the best coverage of the Show, the newest product showcases, and interviews with as many great people as we can.
In fact, let's talk about what this looks like. We start on Sunday with SIG's personal media day where we get to spend a few hours with SIG Sauer and a few of their friends shooting their guns, talking about anything they've got that's new, and just all around having a grand old time at the range.
Then, Monday, we spend at the range in the middle of nowhere. While we'd love to upload content, articles, and videos during this time, there is absolutely zero signal there and hot spots have never worked, either. This is when we get to play with all the new goodies. We can handle and shoot the new pistols, shotguns, rifles, machine guns, and anything else you can think of. It's a great time with tons of walking around in the sun.
By the end of the day, most of us fat bodies (I'm talking about myself here) are ready to travel back home.
But instead, we spend the rest of the week split up among the 12 miles of isles. Nothing but gun industry goodness for as far as the eye can see.
This is when Riley will be out in force podcasting his little heart out. I'll be out collecting data on the new guns and gear to write quick info articles up, Corey will be out videoing stuff for our YouTube channel, some folks, like our buddy Annette Evans, will be posting to social media, and Mitch will … well, he'll order lunch for us all like it's nobody's business.
Hey, we all have our talents, right?
A moment ago I said that there are 12 miles of isles. That's not an overstatement by any stretch. I don't think I've ever seen the entire show any of the years I've gone, and I average 5-6 miles per day. How is that possible? It's just the way it's set up, because there are three floors of vendors and if you want to see everything, you can't stop to look at any of it.
It's a massive show, and it's our job to bring it to your front door. Make sure you stay tuned because this will be our best year yet.
What am I looking forward to this year?
For one, I'm always looking forward to the range day. Shooting stuff and spending time with like minded people is always a good time. I'm also looking forward to the Mossberg pistol, the new SIG Copperhead, the new Colt King Cobra, Glock's new line, as well as anything else that hasn't been announced yet, and there are always tons of new products that are not announced beforehand.
