A couple years back Facebook decided that they’d disallow the sales of firearms on their platform. While none of us where too happy about this decision, Facebook, being a business that neither you nor I own, is allowed to do whatever they want to do on their social media sites.
A recent story on ABC News broke showing that some folks are doing a work around of Facebook’s no gun sales policy, still selling guns on the social media giant. ABC has apparently confirmed these attempted gun sales by offering to buy the “upgraded box” case for $1,000.
Why would a hard-sided gun case be $1,000? Because there was a handgun inside it.
While I’m usually all for sticking the finger to the man, and regularly championing smart-thinking gun owners or companies who find loopholes to fit through, this particular one worries me a bit.
I’m worried because a few creative gun owners are about to ruin gun groups for the rest of us.
Think about it, Facebook is already chomping at the bit and makes it all but impossible for us to do anything.
Facebook gun groups are constantly getting shut down or flagged, and if you’re a gun-related business trying to advertise on the platform, forget about it. It’s just not easy to do anymore.
I made an attempt at making a gun enthusiast group on Facebook just a few months back and was shut down before I even put up a post, just because the word “gun” was in my title.
It’s asinine and really just not cool. And, it’s about to get worse if these smart folks don’t stop selling guns on Facebook.
They will eventually not trust us at all, and the few will ruin it for the many. So, I’m urging you to stop selling your guns on Facebook before they remove all gun groups as a whole from us. I’m not asking you to stop selling your guns on the internet because I really don’t care where you sell them.
There are plenty of places where it’s perfectly fine to sell them online. Here are a couple:
- Gun Listings
- Many states have independent gun classifieds. Just search for one with your state as a modifier.
The point is that I actually enjoy looking through the gun groups and pages that I’m a member of, as do many folks and they will eventually be shut down because of things like this.
After all, all Facebook knows is the ban hammer, and it's YUGE!
