“I didn't want to but had to,” Pitts said. “If I hadn't shot him, he might have shot me. I don't know.”

In February 2016 a North Carolina man was at home late at night when he heard a knock at the door. It was late at night so he decided not to answer. Soon after he heard the sound of breaking glass.

Mr Pitts said he was in bed watching TV when he heard the glass from the back door break.

“I'm disabled and somebody kicks the door in, I got to do something,” Pitts said. “I seen him coming in the door and standings over there and I shot him somewhere right here.”

He fired three shots with a .22 pistol. Two shots hit the intruder in the chest and the third shot hit a door frame.
