Motorcycle Helmets: Are they Bulletproof?

Once again, we decided to use our time on the range to answer some more questions and perhaps bust some more myths regarding firearms and what is and is not safe to use as protection.

Today, we take a look at a motorcycle helmet. Now these things are meant to take a lot of force, saving the skulls of countless accident victims per year and putting up with forces of heads hitting the pavement at over 60 MPH. Now that is a lot of hitting power on a large area, but will the helmet hold up to a .380 caliber bullet fired at it?

The short answer is… no. Even a small caliber handgun bullet will cut through the helmet like butter. So if you were ever thinking of making any super armor, make sure that you are not using motorcycle helmets to protect your noggin.

About Craig Martin

Craig Martin grew up in the unincorporated town of Lewis, Wisconsin. From a young age, Craig was introduced to guns, as he was tasked with defending his backwood home’s wiring from a scourge of red squirrels.

Ever the animal lover, though; Craig couldn’t let these creatures die needlessly. So he would take his kills and leave them for the foxes, coyotes, and bears to eat at a deer feeder his grandfather built around their home.

His lifestyle made Craig understand that guns are a tool and ever since, has spread the word about how firearms are not a menace, like the red squirrel, but an item to help people. He instils this in every article he writes for USA Firearm Training.
