Getting Started In Lock Picking
Survival can be a fairly broad term. As a company that focuses on Firearm Training we acknowledge that we make up only a very small part of a large topic and industry. I once made a long list of skills that are important to work on as part of a larger survival plan. On that list is picking locks.
Keyed locks are still the mechanism of choice on this planet to secure things. Our homes, cars, banks, and much more are protected behind locks. We have all come to accept locks as secure without any thought to their great vulnerabilities.
This is why I feel strongly that anyone committed to survival should become a student of lock picking. There are endless numbers of offensive and defensive circumstances in which one may have the need to open a lock without it's key.
If you are interested in getting started I have a recommendation to make. You are going to need three things.
- Some basic training in the form of books, videos, or a mentor
- A lock picking set that comes with the core tools of the trade
- A transparent lock to assist in your practice and training
I have a good coach and have access to YouTube which is fairly chock full of great tutorial videos. Having a good transparent lock has been a massive step forward in defining and improving my skills.
The best and most economic product I've found in the market is this set by Mazu (link goes to Amazon). It comes with a basic tool set and a transparent training lock in addition to a downloadable book that I think many people would find valuable.
