ALMOST EVERYTHING YOU'VE BEEN TAUGHT ABOUT FIGHTING IN THE DARK IS WRONG
The gear you trust. The techniques you've drilled. Most of it traces back to outdated law-enforcement doctrine and flashlight marketing. Defense After Dark shows you what actually works for concealed carriers today, and why the tactics that made sense for cops in the 1990s and 2000s can fail you when you’re walking to your car, leaving a store, or answering a bump in the night.
A significant portion of real defensive gun uses happen at night, and the crimes most likely to force you to defend yourself—robberies, carjackings, homicides, assaults, and sex offenses—are more likely after dark than in daylight.* If your training only happens on a bright range lane, you’re skipping the conditions that make many encounters so dangerous in the first place.

In‑person low‑light classes are rare, expensive, and usually built around someone else’s schedule, range, and weather. To get even a single weekend of serious low‑light instruction, most shooters end up paying for:
-
Tuition: commonly $400–$650 for a two‑day class.
-
Ammo: 400–800 rounds isn’t unusual, which can easily mean another $150–$300 depending on caliber and current prices.
-
Travel: gas or airfare, plus at least one or two nights in a hotel, adding hundreds more once you factor in food and time away from work or family.
-
Range and night‑shoot fees: many facilities charge extra to run after dark or to use specific bays and lighting setups.
By the time it’s over, a single in‑person low‑light weekend can quietly climb into the $800–$1,400+ range, and if the class sells out or gets canceled, you’re back to square one.
Defense After Dark brings that same level of pressure‑tested knowledge directly to you for a fraction of that cost. You get a structured, on‑demand course you can pause, rewind, and revisit anytime—without burning a weekend, hauling gear across the state, or hoping there’s a night slot open at a range near you.
THREE THINGS THAT'LL CHANGE HOW YOU TRAIN
The Light Attributes That Matter
Most flashlight companies train you to obsess over the biggest number on the box while quietly burying the specs that actually matter when it’s dark. Instead of asking “How bright is it on paper?”, this course will push you to look at how a light really behaves in real environments: how it punches through darkness, how it controls what you and a threat can see, and how reliably it performs when you’re under stress. By the end, you’ll rethink what belongs in your pocket, on your gun, and next to your bed.
Light Techniques
From the Harries, FBI, Surefire, and other “classics,” a lot of flashlight techniques look great in demos but don’t always survive real stress. This course digs into those commonly taught methods, challenges the assumptions behind them, and puts technique and timing to the test with an eye toward what actually helps you win when things start to fall apart. You’ll see why many shooters end up rethinking how they hold, move, and manage their light in a defensive encounter.
Legacy vs. current
Most of the low‑light techniques still being taught today were built around older gear, older assumptions, and a very different understanding of how criminals actually behave after dark. They served their purpose for law enforcement working in teams, clearing buildings, and following department policies—but they don’t always fit the reality of an armed civilian suddenly alone with a handgun and a single light source.
The instructors pressure‑testing this problem now have landed on approaches that are simpler, faster, and built around modern civilian carry. Some of it may sound “wrong” compared to what you’ve been shown—but once you understand why current tactics look the way they do, it’s hard to go back to legacy methods.
Your featured guide in this course is Dan Brady, a career law‑enforcement officer with over 25 years of service and more than 20 years as a firearms instructor, who now focuses his work on curriculum for armed citizens and is widely recognized in the training community as a subject‑matter expert in defensive white light.
After Taking This Course You Will...
Confidently select, set up, and maintain handheld, weapon‑mounted, and rifle‑mounted lights so they actually work when you need them most.
Understand how darkness, shadows, and photonic barriers affect what you and a potential attacker can see—and how to use that to your advantage.
Apply proven low‑light techniques with both handheld and weapon‑mounted lights, and know when to prioritize one over the other in real situations.
Control your light in a way that gathers information while denying visual information to your adversary, instead of accidentally spotlighting yourself.
Run structured dry‑fire and live‑fire low‑light drills that translate directly to real‑world environments like parking lots, store exits, and home approaches.
Make faster, better decisions in low‑light defensive encounters, from first detection through threat identification and engagement or disengagement.
PLUS: GET THE TACTICAL FLASHLIGHTS FOR CONCEALED CARRIERS FIELD GUIDE
Every Defense After Dark purchaser gets this exclusive bonus guide included with the course.
Knowing how to use a flashlight defensively is one thing. Knowing what makes a light worth carrying in the first place is another.
That's why we've put together Tactical Flashlights for Concealed Carriers, an exclusive field guide by ConcealedCarry.com President Jacob Paulsen.
It's designed to give you a practical reference you can come back to whenever you're evaluating the light already in your pocket or shopping for your next one.
Inside you'll learn:
- What actually makes a flashlight “tactical”
- The three jobs a defensive handheld light can perform
- Why candela and lumens aren't the same thing
- Practical minimums and features to consider when choosing a defensive light
- What to look for in controls, beam pattern, batteries, durability, and carry method
- Important safety and legal considerations
- Where weapon-mounted lights fit—and where a handheld light still matters
It's yours FREE when you purchase Defense After Dark.
Watch the course to understand the concepts. Keep the field guide as a quick reference when you're choosing, carrying, and evaluating your defensive light.
Who it is for:
This course is for both beginners and experienced shooters alike who want to build real confidence in low-light defense, not just shoot in a well-lit range lane.
It’s ideal for:
-
Concealed carriers who’ve never had formal low-light training but want a clear, safe starting point.
-
Experienced shooters who already run a handgun or rifle confidently, and now want to layer in smart, efficient handheld and weapon-mounted light use—especially if their past training relied on legacy low-light tactics built for law enforcement that don’t fully match today’s gear, environments, or civilian use-of-force realities. This course respects what you’ve already learned, then shows you how modern approaches evolve those ideas so you’re not stuck using techniques designed for yesterday’s lights, duty belts, and patrol priorities.

Jacob Paulsen - President of ConcealedCarry.com
Dear Friend,
Of every course we've ever filmed, this is the one that changed the most about what I personally believed was true. I'm not the instructor here — I'm the student. I walked away rethinking gear and technique I'd been confident about for years.
It is hard to admit, and perhaps not obvious to many, but most of the low light information out there is based on a law enforcement application and the best practices taught by law enforcement over 20 years ago. This course gets to the heart of what concealed carriers need to know and need to do and it is the based on the current best practices.
Sincerely,
Jacob Paulsen
President | ConcealedCarry.com
I used to laugh at the idea of a flashlight as a serious defensive tool. In my mind it was a glorified Maglite club, not something that could actually stop anyone. Then I played the ‘bad guy’ in this course. The first time Riley hit me with a proper defensive beam, everything changed. I couldn’t see him, couldn’t judge distance, and couldn’t even make out the car that was right in front of me. I had no safe direction to move. I wasn’t just annoyed, I was completely blinded, disoriented, and functionally helpless. That one experience permanently changed how I think about flashlights in self‑defense and made it clear what Defense After Dark is really about: moving the flashlight from ‘nice accessory’ to essential tool in your defensive plan.
Sincerely,
Mitch Goerdt

DEFENSE AFTER DARK WOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED WITHOUT OUR SUPPORTING PARTNERS
Putting together a course like Defense After Dark takes more than cameras and instructors. It takes knowledgeable people, quality equipment, facilities, and companies willing to support serious firearms education for responsibly armed citizens.
We want to specifically thank Apache Solutions and Noxon/Modlite for their support in helping us bring Defense After Dark to life.
Apache Solutions has spent years developing practical firearms training for armed citizens, and instructor Dan Brady's work with the Apache instructor cadre helped shape the experience and perspective he brings to this course.
Noxon/Modlite supported the equipment side of the project and gave us the opportunity to put modern defensive lighting to work throughout the course. The Noxon Anark became the handheld light you'll see used in many of the demonstrations—and ultimately the light we chose to offer with the Defense After Dark bundle.
We're grateful to both companies for supporting the project and helping us create better low-light education for concealed carriers.
What Beginner AND Experienced Carriers Are Saying About Our Online Courses...
About the Light in the Bundle
One of the first questions people ask after finishing this course is “so which light should I buy?” This is our answer.
Noxon Anark
Made by Modlite — a name you'll recognize if you've spent any time around serious weapon lights.
High output
1,000 lumens · 18,000 candela · 2.5 hr runtime
Admin mode
80 lumens · 1,000 candela · 17 hr runtime
Interface
Two dedicated buttons — one for admin, one for instant full output. No cycling through modes.
Power
Internal battery, weather-sealed USB-C charging
Carry
Reversible high-tension pocket clip — bezel up or down, or clipped to a hat brim
Why this one
The interface is the reason. Most EDC lights make you cycle through modes to find the output you want. In a parking lot at night, with your heart rate climbing, that hesitation is the whole problem. The Anark gives you one button for everyday tasks and a separate one for instant full output. You never have to think about it.
About the candela number. In this course we'll spend real time on why candela matters more than the lumen figure printed on the box. So let's be straight with you: 18,000 candela is about the minimum you should have on a defensive light. This light is right there and punches hard for something this small that fits in a pocket. We love that it is small, can be used for small tasks but punches up heavy and hard when needed in a tactical situation. The best light in the world is the one you actually have on you.
It's the light in the demos. When you watch the course and see a handheld light being run, this is what you're looking at. You're not translating from someone else's gear to yours.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to buy a specific flashlight?
No. The course teaches you how to evaluate any light so you can judge what you already own — and know exactly what to look for if you upgrade.
I've taken a low-light course before. Is this redundant?
That's exactly who this is for. If your training is more than a few years old, a good portion of it is due for an update — this course is largely about what's changed and why.
How do I access the course?
It's a fully online video course. You get instant access after enrolling and can stream it on any device, as many times as you want.
Is this for beginners or experienced shooters?
Both. It starts from first principles but doesn't stay there — even seasoned shooters and instructors tend to walk away rethinking things.
Does the course include live support?
Send questions anytime and our team will help. Our Colorado based support team is fabulous and responds to all inquiries within 2 business days. If they can't help, they will escalate your question to the course instructor.
How long do I have access?
Lifetime.
*The attorney says we have to disclaim that if we go out of business then this site will likely go down and you will lose access to anything you haven't downloaded.
Are there any other recurring fees?
Absolutely not.
Can I share my password with my family members?
Technically yes. We would rather you just invite them to come over and watch the course together with you.
Can I watch this on ANY device?
You can watch it on any internet-connected device such as a phone, tablet or laptop. If you would prefer an internet-free version, contact us and we'll see if we can help.
Are these courses close captioned?
Yes. All courses in Guardian University are close captioned to assist with learning and to help the hearing impaired.
So.. there it is.
I want you to have access to this firearm training course without having to jump on a plane, sit in a classroom or write a series of checks like my trainers and I did…
