What I’m Carrying Right Now, In Which Holster, And The Ammo I Trust

I've been carrying a concealed gun for a while now. I'm not exactly sure how long it has been but I think I'm approaching a decade (though not quite yet). Those of you who know me, understand that my wife wasn't always the pro-gunner she's grown to be which definitely hindered my getting a concealed carry permit even though I've been a gun owner since I was a kid.

But, that can be a story for a different day.

The guns and gear each one of us carries for self-defense changes over the course of time, and I feel it's a good idea for us to share this stuff with you both for transparency and to show that we live this lifestyle we teach, as well.

My first concealed carry gun was actually a full-size Springfield Armory XD-9. In fact, this gun pictured below is the very gun with tens of thousands of rounds through it:

Yes, I still own it because I rarely go through the trouble of selling stuff. But, my thinking on this particular firearm has evolved and I no longer carry it for defense.

My thoughts on the guns and gear I choose have changed greatly from when I first started carrying. I've written at great length on why I thought the above-pictured pistol was perfect for new concealed carriers and I no longer hold that position. I suspect that too can be another story for another day.

Let's discuss what my current setup is —

My Gun:

My current go-to concealed carry firearm is none other than the SIG Sauer P365XL that is pictured at the top of this article. This pistol feels right at home in my hand, like it was born to be there. It's ultra flat shooting with minimal muzzle rise, allowing for faster follow up shots.

It just disappears on my body, which is the entire point of concealed carry anyway, so that's a huge plus. I'm a big fan of the rear sights complete with small dots as well as the front night sight that draws my attention.

The trigger break is also perfect for my style of shooting and all of the above traits help me put consistent rounds on target.

You can read more on the differences between the 365 and the 365XL here, if you've never heard it before. I prefer the XL, but have got a lot of trigger time behind both models, and they're both great guns.

Ammunition:

P365 With SIG 365 V-Crown Ammo

The SIG P365 performs exceptionally well with the 365 V-Crown 115 grain loads optimized for a gun like the P365. The 365 V-Crowns also performed very well in ballistic gel tests for a defensive load.

My carry ammo, the rounds that are in my magazines right now are either SIG V-Crown jacketed hollow points (like the above pictured) or Federal HST. The main reason why is because they both show consistent expansion and performance both of which are absolutely necessary for a self-defense gun.

My holster:

Tulster IWB SIG Holster

I currently have a few holsters for this gun that are molded to fit it, as well as a couple that aren't specific to it. The Kydex holsters are either a Tulster (like the one pictured above, though I think that's Matthew's pic) or a Concealment Express. I have also carried this pistol in a JM4 Tactical Holster, as well as the Brave Response.

What I carry in depends largely on what I'm doing, wearing, etc. The main point is that I've grown comfortable drawing out of each of these holsters and continue to practice with them on a regular basis.

I urge you to also practice drawing your gun from your holster as often as possible.

Mag carrier:

I've been favoring the Snag Mag as of late because I hate stuff on my waistline. I'm big as it is and don't need anything else to get caught on things but also feel the need the carry extra ammo.

So, the Snag Mag drops into my pocket and I call it quits. There was a bit of a learning curve here, but as I practiced with it I got better at getting it out with speed.

Conclusion:

That about does it for my EDC self-defense setup. There are other things I carry, like a knife, light, etc., but as far as concealed carry goes, this is my gear.

How about you? What are you currently carrying? let us know in the comments below.

A SCCY cpx2, in a Bulldog belt slide. If the situation dictates, I use a versacarry clip, carried appendix. Spare mag in my pocket on magnetic clip, doesn’t have a name on it, leading me to believe its Chinese, but a great gift from my son and works well.

I currently carry an HK P30 in a Craft thumb break leather obw. My ammo is Hornady 9mm critical duty.
The P30 is a gun that really feels perfect in my hand. Easy shooting and spot on accurate. I learned handgun shooting with the 1911. So the P30 with the manual safety is light with the familiar 1911 feel.

365xl in a vedder light tuck loaded with Federal HST 124gr. The odd thing is the only thing even remotely close to a malfunction with the gun came when I tried using the 365 ammo.

Colt Delta 10mm, Dillon super knife, spare mag in pocket. Holster is a Milt Sparks IWB.

I live in central Florida so what I’m wearing is an important factor. So I mostly carry a CZ 2075 Rami. But I also have others..some larger, some smaller (and yes, I practice with all of them). But the CZ is my first choice.
Primary holster is Alien Gear appendix Shape Shift.
I have a drawer full of mag carriers, but the cheapest one turns out to be my favorite. I stumbled across a magnetic IWB carrier by Creatrill and they work great and are the most comfortable by far.

During the work week I have found my J- frame in a DiSantis pocket holster is perfect for me, loaded with Critical Duty. Otherwise, depending on the situation I’ll either have my G19 at 8 o’clock (I’m a lefty) in an Alien Gear holster, or my Hi-Power in an Alien Gear shoulder rig.

I’m not caring anything right now. For some reason the NIX system has disqualified me from getting a Florida, my home state, CCW. And I tried to purchase a new shotgun, and was also turned down. I have no arrests, no restraining orders, not even a parking ticket. I have been fighting this for about a year, and can not get any answers from the FBI or the state of Florida. If anyone else has had this problem, please let me know

Ahoy!! My name is Chris, and my EDC is also the Sig P365XL along with a JPoint 4 Red Dot in a Vedder Holster!! I use both IWB and OWB holsters depending what I’m wearing and what I’m doing. For my personal defense ammo, I use Federal Ammunition HST 124 grain hollow points!! I shoot often, and carry daily, training and practice is a must in my opinion!!

Glock 36 in .45 ACP in an Alien Gear IWB holster. My ammo is Speer Gold Dot and I carry 2 spare magazines, each with the Pierce Grip Plus 1 base plate in a standard Glock magazine carrier. The in gun magazine has the standard Glock base plate to aid in keeping it concealed. Been using the Glock 36 for about 18 years and have put thousands of rounds through it with out a hiccup, the holster has only been used for the last 6 years, In winter I sometimes switch to my Glock 22 in .40 S&W, same ammo and holster type, but only 1 spare magazine, again in a Glock standard mag carrier.

Been carrying a XD 45 in a Comp-Tac Minotaur for 15 yrs, also have xs big dot night sights and carry a spare mag in a Safariland 716 horizontal. Carry belt Daltechforce steelcore bullbelt and carry ammo remington 230 golden sabor.

  14. Frank Snyder May 13, 2020 at 9:29 pm #

I carry a Glock 23. I like a laser for low light situations so I use a Versa Carry Zero bulk holster and mag pouches. I always carry with a round in battery and two spare mags. that means I carry 40 rounds of.40 Winchester 180 grain JHP. I have also been known to carry a Barretta Tomcat in .32 ACP as a backup. If I am in a situation where I need deep conceal I carry a Sig 238.

  15. Mike Davis May 13, 2020 at 9:55 pm #

Glock 19 w/ TLR-7 rail mounted light carried (owb) in a Safariland thumb retention made specifically for the G-19/TLR-7. Love this set up.

Khar PM9 or 45 (depending on the outside temperature)
Because I’m a slob and wear the minimal amount of summer clothing allowed by law (and courtesy to others, no one wants to se an old man in a banana hammock)
And because I WILL CARRY those.
That is my EDC rig for general purpose outings and suck. Again, it’s because it’s the gun I know I WILL put on.
I’ve found myself having to leave previous ones in the car sometimes because they printed.
I can hide that PM9 in a fat roll if I wanted to.
I do always have other weapons in proximity though.
Shotgun or rifle in the car I’m driving.
Or a bigger rig when I’m hunting or outdoors in general.

I guess I’ve learned that the best carry gun is the one you WILL carry, regardless of what it is.
